The earth is crying. It wants us to understand how we are depleting it
of what it holds in her womb. It nurtures us, but we fail to understand
its concern. In addition to that, we have almost deprived the earth of
some of its natural resources; there are other awaiting depletion. It is
not that we do not know what harm pollution brings to the environment,
and us but we take no steps to curb it. Well, some steps have been
taken.
There
have been efforts to reduce pollution by devising eco-friendly
transport that runs on human power. Honestly, that is a much better
approach. It will keep you fit and preserve the natural resources. Known
as HPV (human powered vehicles), they have been functioning since the
time immemorial (rickshaws, rowers, skates, gondolas etc. are an
example), but the human power has been put to more use in human powered buses to patronize green transport.
1. Human powered (HP) Bus
This bus looks good and much like a normal bus, except for the fact it
is not covered to let the passengers breathe fresh air. It was seen in
Netherlands. It is a 32-seater bus developed by the students of WSV
Simon Stevin student’s organization. The base of the bus is developed
from a truck chassis. This 2500 kg bus also has reverse gears and can
travel at a speed of 20kmph. Obviously, with humans driving it, speeding
it to 40kmph will drench you with sweat by the time you reach your
destination. It involves pedaling from all the passengers.
2. De Cafe Racer’s BSO vehicle
This is a fun ride developed for school children. This school bus is
attractive, light and can carry 10 children and a driver. It has pedals
that enable children to drive the bus by pedaling it. The driver can make use of a secondary engine fitted near to him.
3. Busycle:
Made from a Dodge van, this bus can carry 15 passengers at a time. This
bus is entirely eco-friendly since it uses only recyclable products. It
seats passengers on office chairs.
It also features gears including a reverse gear. It provides a pair of
pedals to every passenger to let him fuel the bus with human energy.
Though the bus will definitely not give you the fun of a speedy BMW, it
will surely provide you the fun of powering a vehicle in open, along
with several other people.
4. Bus Bike:
This is another human powered vehicle that has gained considerable
popularity in Holland. It looks attractive and can accommodate 15 people
along with the driver at one time. Provided with a steering wheel in
the front to direct the Bus Bike, it can be used to take children to
school. All in all, it is a fun concept.
5. City Cycle:
It is a lovely model that can carry 15 people. Use it for parties on the
go with stereo and LED lighting provided in the vehicle. City Cycle
comes with adjustable seats. The speed is low; just 7 mph, but where is
the room for speed when you’re looking for some fun time with friends!
Party around in City Cycle!
